LP: What are League Points and how to get them in LoL?

LP, or League Points, are the points you win and lose in League of Legends ranked games. Each division takes 100 LP: reach 100 and you move up a division, drop below 0 and you can move down. How many LP you get for a win or lose for a loss depends on your hidden matchmaking rating (MMR), not on your KDA.

How do you get LP?

You earn LP by winning ranked games and lose LP when you lose them. Solo/Duo and Flex each have their own rank and LP. The amount per game is not fixed:

• If your MMR is higher than your visible rank, wins pay more LP than losses cost, so you climb faster.
• If your MMR is lower than your visible rank, wins pay less than losses cost until the two line up again.
• Riot gives LP for the result of the game. Kills, KDA or damage do not add bonus LP.
• Since patch 26.15 (July 2026), players who are autofilled into a role they did not pick earn double LP on a win (Aegis of Valor).

How much LP do you need to rank up?

100 LP per division. Riot's current support pages describe no promotion series: once you reach 100 LP you move up, and any extra LP carries over. 100 LP in division I takes you to division IV of the next tier, for example from Gold I to Platinum IV.

Can you lose a rank?

• If you lose a game at 0 LP you drop a division, for example from Gold III to Gold IV.
• If you lose at 0 LP in division IV, you drop to the tier below. You land at 25, 50 or 75 LP, depending on how far your MMR is below that tier.
• When you first reach Master you are protected from demotion for 3 games.

Why is my LP gain so low?

Low LP gains, together with high LP losses, almost always mean your MMR is below your visible rank. This often happens after a losing streak or after you climbed with a lucky run of wins. The fix is to keep winning: as your win rate holds, your MMR catches up and the gains grow. LP decay is not the reason for low gains. Decay only takes LP away from inactive Diamond and higher players (see below); it does not change how much you earn per win.

Is there a maximum amount of LP?

From Iron to Diamond, 100 LP is the most you can hold in a division, because reaching it promotes you. Master, Grandmaster and Challenger have no LP ceiling. Grandmaster needs at least 400 LP and Challenger at least 800 LP, and both are limited to a fixed number of players per region, updated once a day.

How does LP decay work?

Only Diamond and above decay when you stop playing ranked. Each ranked game banks days of protection:

• Diamond: 7 days per game, up to 28 days banked. Each decay costs 50 LP.
• Master and above: 1 day per game, up to 14 days banked. Each decay costs 75 LP, and apex players who decay fall to Diamond II.

Placements and LP

Each ranked queue starts with 5 placement games, and a placement loss costs no LP. Riot's support pages say placements can't put you above Diamond III.

How to gain LP faster

• Win consistently. A steady win rate raises your MMR, and higher MMR means bigger gains per win.
• Play a small champion pool in one role. Fewer unknown matchups mean fewer avoidable losses.
• Duo inside the allowed range with a friend you communicate well with.
• Review your losses. Deaths before objectives and missed farm are the most common ways games slip away. LoL coaching pairs you with a high-Elo coach who reviews your games with you.
