Hextech Chests Return and Champion Costs Slashed in LoL Patch 25.05!
Riot Games is reversing course on some controversial changes to League of Legends' reward system. Following community backlash, Hextech Chests are making a comeback, and the Blue Essence cost for new champions is being cut in half. This update, arriving with Patch 25.05, marks a significant shift in Riot’s approach to in-game rewards.
Riot Acknowledges Mistakes in Reward System Overhaul
Earlier this year, Riot attempted to streamline League’s complex reward system by reducing the number of currencies and consolidating rewards into the battle pass. However, these changes unintentionally stripped away level-up rewards, making it much harder for players—especially newcomers—to unlock champions and skins.
Hextech Chests Are Back
In response to overwhelming negative feedback, Riot has confirmed that Hextech Chests will once again be earnable. Starting in Patch 25.05, players can obtain up to 10 chests and keys per act—eight through the free battle pass track and two via the Honor system. The chests earned will match those previously obtained through Champion Mastery.
Champion Costs Slashed by 50%
One of the biggest frustrations for new players has been the high Blue Essence cost to unlock champions. To address this, Riot is halving the cost for all champions in Patch 25.05. This major reduction aims to boost accessibility for newer players and make expanding champion pools more rewarding.
Changes to Skins and Future Content
In addition to reward adjustments, Riot is refining its approach to skins. The highly anticipated Exalted Mordekaiser skin has been delayed to better align with its intended fantasy. Moving forward, Riot will focus on quality over quantity, reducing the total number of Season skins and dedicating more development time to each release. For Act 2, the paid battle pass will feature two standard skins and one Prestige variant.
A Positive Response from the Community
The return of Hextech Chests and reduced champion costs have been widely praised by the community. Many players who had even announced a "strike" have resumed grinding Elo in LoL, ending their protests. Additionally, Riot has announced that players who purchased champions during Patch 25.4 can request a refund for half the Blue Essence cost by contacting player support.
LoL Patch 25.05
Riot has confirmed that Patch 25.05 is rolling out to the public beta environment. While some features may take time to fully reflect in the build, these adjustments are clear signs of Riot's commitment to restoring trust within the League community.
With these changes, Riot is making strides to repair the in-game economy and reward system. By bringing back beloved features and making champions more accessible, the studio is setting a new standard for how it listens to player feedback. Only time will tell if these changes will fully satisfy the community—or if more adjustments lie ahead.
